- word choice - Mersault is always, blank towards things, he has no real emotional words. Why does Camus make Mersault use no emotional words?
- sentence structure - Sentences are generally short and rather blank, and rather simple when Mersault is takling. Why does Camus keep Mersault's speech simple and concise?
- images - There are not that many images, besides the observed reactions around Mersault, the sun, and the sea. Why does Camus only allow images of things like the sun and the sea to affect Mersault?
- symbols - The sun, love, and the sea are a few of the symbols that seem to have reapered. What is Camus trying to represent with the symbol of the sun?
- figures of speech - Mersault so far has been the only character like himself, while everybody else is different. What is Camus trying to compare Mersault to?
- rhetorical devices - The Narrator, Mersault is rather dry, and uses bland language. What additional effects are Camus trying to display by using Mersault?
- patterns - Mersault is always complaining about the heat, and the sun, this reoccurs through out the whole story. What message is Camus trying to show with the motif of the sun and heat?
- narrators - The narrator is an active partisapant and the story is told through his eyes. Why does Camus use Mersault as a narrator instead of someone else?
- structure - The time goes by fast and slow, at the beggining it slightly jumped but now that Mersault is in jail time seems to be going by slowly. What is Camus trying to say by having time go slower while Mersault is in jail?

1. Camus choses to use nonemotional words with Meursault because his character does not show emotion, Camus portrays Meursault as uninterested in life, and to show existentialism through Meursault's character.
ReplyDelete2. Camus keeps Meursault's speech simple and concise because he wants to emphasize that Meursault's thoughts and actions are simple and concise, Meursault does not have much to say, and Camus is showing Meursault's character through his speech.
3. Camus uses the sun and the sea to affect Meursault in order to portray that only physical discomfort has an effect on Meursault.

3. Camus only allows certain things to affect Mersalut because of his general indifference to most things in life. It is only these truly striking items that have an effect on him.
ReplyDelete4. Camus is trying to represent the turmoil of the world. Just like the sun, Mersault is bothered by this and instead turns away to a life of existentialism.
5. Camus is trying to contrast Mersault with the rest of the characters. The indifference he shows to most things seems to heighten the emotions that the other characters feel.
7. Camus is trying to show a differing point of view about the sun. While many view the sun as pleasant, Camus contrasts this with a focus Mersault tends to have on the unpleasant aspects of it.
8.Camus uses Mersault as a narrator to create a different point of view then what most people carry. Through the lens of Mersault, the world is viewed differently than most people experience, and Camus is trying to force them to look at it through Mersault's perspective.
9.Camus is having the reader experience the same kind of monotony as Mersault is feeling. While not necessarily a feeling of boredom, it is meant to represent the length of time Mersault spent there.

ReplyDelete2. Sentence: Camus has Mersault use short sentences and others to use long sentences to create a contrast between Mersault and everyone else. This also creates the effect that Mersault is detached, alone and unique to the story.
3. Images: Only the sun and sea affect Mersault because they are both impersonal like himself. Mersault is affected by these things because he can relate to them, and they both seem detached from everyday activity much like himself.
4. Symbol: The sun is used to create a negative effect on Mersault, the sun is constantly interacting with him and this bothers him. It bothers Mersault because it is acting the polar opposite of himself.
5. Figures of Speech: Camus is trying to compare Mersault to the other characters in the book. Mersault and the others differ greatly because of Mersaults detached state of mind, this helps build on the existentialist idea.
Camus doesn't have Meursault using emotional words because Meursault himself has almost no emotion. (Word Choice)

Camus makes time go by slower in the prison because Meursault is not indifferent to it, it is a big change for him and he has actual opinions towards it unlike other places. (Structure)
Camus use the motif of the sun and heat as a thing that doesn't go away like human emotions that Meursault denies and that the pain they cause does disapear for a time they do come back.
ReplyDeleteCamus use Meursault as the narrator to give us a deeped insight to why he lacking emotion. The fact that you can see how he feels toward other people when they express emotion helps use connect to him.
ReplyDeleteCamus does make it seem like time is going slower for Meursault while he is in jail but he actual make months fly by and it makes the changes in Meursault seem likey they are happening really fast. Camus might be showing how changes in people happen over time and you can't expect dramatic results right away.

-Everyone in the book sees the sun as pleasant, however, Camus contrasts this with how Meursalt feel unpleasant with the sun.
-Camus uses Meursalt as a narrator to create a sort of different point of view than what people commonly have. Through Meursalt, the world is viewed entirely differently than what people would experience it like and Camus wants people to see things through Meursalt's views.
-Camus is getting the reader to see how Meursalt is feeling and have the experience the same kind of scenery as him. Also, Camus is trying to show how long Meursalt spends at the jail.
